WE NEED YOUR HELP and WE NEED IT NOW !!! If you believe that the Toronto Centre for the Arts is important to the cultural landscape of this City, please take a moment this weekend to let the City Councillors know of your support. Please write to email@example.com this weekend, supporting the establishment of a Theatre Task Force that will make recommendations to the City Manager. THIS MUST BE DONE BEFORE COUNCIL MEETS ON MONDAY MORNING!!! Councillor Gary Crawford who sits on the TCA Board, has sent us the "call to action" which is below. Please forward this to anyone and everyone you know who supports the Arts in Toronto, and ask them to help us inundate Council with letters.
City Council, at its meeting of September 26 and September 27, 2011, will be considering the following recommendation from the September 20, 2011 meeting of Executive Committee:
Authorize the City Manager to issue a Request for Expression of Interest, on terms satisfactory to the City Manager, to determine the options for sale, lease, operation or other arrangement in respect of the Toronto Centre for the Arts, the Hummingbird Centre for the Performing Arts (the Sony Centre), and the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts.
It is important that we act on this now and for the following reasons:
1. A thriving arts, culture and museums sector is key to success in attracting profitable industries;
2. Arts and culture are essential to Toronto's economy generating $9 billion every year;
3. Arts and culture create jobs. One hundred and thirty thousand (130,000) people work in the sector and many more depend on related businesses, including those in hospitality and tourism;
4. In 2010, there were 20 million visits from every corner of Toronto to City-supported arts events; and
5. Every dollar Toronto invests in arts organizations attracts $17.00 more from private and public sources.
To this end, Councillor Gary Crawford is asking if you could please send all City Councillors a letter indicating your support for the establishment of a Theatres Task Force that will make recommendations to the City Manager before a Request for Expression of Interest on terms satisfactory to the City Manager, to determine the options for sale, lease, operation or other arrangement in respect of the Toronto Centre for the Arts, the Hummingbird Centre for the Performing Arts (the Sony Centre), and the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts is sent out.
Please address your letters to the City Clerk and e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org or via fax to 416-392-2980 prior to Monday, September 26, 2011.
The Toronto Centre for the Arts is the ONLY major theatre north of Bloor Street. In addition to Dancap and Encore, it is home to Orchestra Toronto, Toronto Philharmonia, Teatron Jewish Theatre, Angelwalk Theatre, Childrens Theatre Project, Bach Childrens Chorus, Shakespearience, and many more organizations that allow citizens, young and old, to develop a passion and love for music, theatre, and dance, as well as other art forms. It would be a travesty if the City stopped their support of this wonderful performance venue.
PLEASE let us make some noise about this!
Many thanks for your help,
